Glass Cup
Project : Modeling
Wow, what a busy month this has been. Some times when something comes along and changes your daily routine it takes a bit to get back into rhythm. What better to get back into rhythm than another simple model of a coffee cup.
You might ask yourself, why would I do so many cups? Well actually I'm working towards a particular single piece of work. Stick with me and you'll see.
This glass cup is another favorite of mine. I didn't need much reference for this cup but it's always always a good idea. I took a simple profile picture and made a silhouette in photoshop.
Instead of using the revolve tool I simply took a sphere, cut it in half and matched it up with the silhouette.
From there I pulled out the legs and handle.
I used the smooth proxy to create a smooth version of the low polygon wireframe while maintaining the low polygon version for easy manipulation. You can imagine trying to tweak the surface in an area of 100 or so polygons, not easy. That is why making a proxy is good.
Check out some awesome patterns produced! You go to love these. Ok, maybe you don't but I do.
I used the Dielectric_material, a mental ray shader, for the glass look. Really I'm looking forward to using the l_glass shader but someone needs to compile it for OS X. Please someone, if you know someone that has a l_glass shader post it on CG Talk.
You get some wild refraction in the glass. I love it. I just think of how this is simulating Einstein's idea of how light doesn't bend but it's space bending.
